Margarita Moreno-Betancur awarded the ASC 2023 Horizon Lecture
Congratulations to Margarita on being selected to present a one of the three inaugural Horizon Lectures at ASC 2023. These awards were established by the SSA for this year’s conference to recognise emerging leaders in Australia’s statistics community, and their contributions to advancing statistical practice across academia, government, and/or industry through a competitive application process.
Margarita was nominated by John Carlin for her exceptional achievements across the four selection criteria: career trajectory, impact on statistical theory, methods and applications, leadership in promoting and communicating the good practice of statistics, and leadership through developing the next generation of statisticians and contributing to improving statistical literacy beyond the Australian statistics community.
Margarita first joined the ViCBiostat network as a postdoctoral researcher and has since been competitively self-funded by an ARC DECRA and an NHMRC Investigator Grant. She was appointed as one of the Executive Committee members of ViCBiostat in 2016. In 2022, she was promoted to Associate Professor and appointed the co-Director of the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU) at MCRI.
She leads the causal inference and missing data research teams and has supervised 8 postdoctoral biostatisticians and 7 PhD students. She has 87 research publications and has developed numerous new methods which have been applied across influential international studies and adopted by the WHO.
Within ViCBiostat, she has led the development and delivery of a number of our Summer School short courses and provides valuable guidance to our EMCRs and PhD students at monthly Work In Progress meetings.
Congratulations Margarita on this wonderful recognition of your achievements. We look forward to your lecture at ASC 2023!
