Once the sole preserve of psychologists and educationalists, psychometric scales are now used in a wide range of research to measure non-physical outcomes such as quality of life, preferences, satisfaction, attitudes and behaviour. However, the theoretical and practical underpinnings of these instruments is poorly understood. This talk will introduce the fundamentals of psychometric measurement, including steps in the development and evaluation of psychometric tests and inventories. Time permitting, modern, model-based approaches will also be discussed.
